Some facts and figures : In 1932, the Chamber of Commerce in Quimper
transformed a military site into an airfield, ministerially approved with effect
from 1935 for use as a private airfield. During the second World War, it was requisitioned
by the occupying Germans. In 1960, commercial flights commenced. Quimper
had a connection to Paris Orly during the summer and at weekends. The airport
checked in 376 passengers in 1961. Other flights followed, in particular to the
Channel Islands.
From 1965, the flights became daily. A control tower was built, and the airport
played an important role in the development of the region of Cornouaille. In 1967,
the number of passengers reached a total of 10,000. In 1975, an all-weather
runway was built – running from east to west. From the 80s onwards, local
authorities participated in various building works (lengthening the runway, constructing
a new parking area for aircraft) and in 1985, an important milestone was reached
with the laying of the first stone of a more functional terminal building. In
1987, the name of the airport was changed. In order to indicate its importance
in this part of Brittany, it became known as Quimper Cornouaille airport. In
2006, a total of 135,000 passengers used Quimper Cornouaille airport. Book
